What if…

In the story of Isaac and Rebekah, Abraham tasks his servant with finding a wife for his son from his own country and relatives. The very first thing out of the servant’s mouth is “What if…”

What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land? Genesis 24:5 NIV

He wasn’t the first in the Bible to utter these words either. Abraham himself, Moses, Joseph’s brothers, Jacob… These two words together – oh, the power they hold! They can derail us from pursuing the vision, they can prevent us from taking the first steps towards the task ahead. Why? Because at their root, these two little words together reveal fear and a lack of trust.

We hear them all the time: What if I embarrass myself? What if he never speaks to me again? What if it hurts? What if there’s no money left? What if she leaves? What if I fail? What if I make the wrong decision?

Don’t let these two words stop you in your tracks. If the servant had let his ‘what if’ stop him, then the whole genealogy of Christ would have been skewed! God is bigger than any ‘what if’. And we see from this story (and know from countless scriptures) that God goes ahead of you (v7). Nothing will surprise Him and so therefore you can trust Him. We also see from this story that it’s not wrong (in fact it’s very right) to bring our ‘what ifs’ to God. The servant goes as he’s instructed – despite his ‘what if’ – and then he stops. And prays.

And you know what. Before he had finished praying (v15) Before he had finished praying guys! Before he had finished praying his ‘what if’ was no longer an issue. I’m not saying that everything you pray for happens instantaneously exactly as you wish. But I am saying that the power of the ‘what if’ can be resolved when you come to the One who is never surprised. Don’t let your ‘what ifs’ hold you back. Go to God. Pray. Trust Him. And then go for it!
