Voice

We often say we want to hear God’s voice, we want to know His voice, or some variation of that idea. What even is your voice? Your voice is the expression of your attitude. Your voice is your opinion. Your voice is your emotion. Your voice is paramount in communicating what is happening in the depths of your being. So how do we hear God’s voice? How do we access his heart, his opinions, his emotion and expression?

Jesus.

“This Son perfectly mirrors God, and is stamped with God’s nature. He holds everything together by what he says—powerful words!” (Hebrews 1:3 MSG)

If we want to know God’s voice then what we’re really saying is we want to know Jesus. We want to get so well acquainted with him that we understand his every move, thought, attitude, desires. We want to understand the way He works.

And so we go back to the Word.

“This is my son; my Chosen One. Listen to Him.” (Luke 9:35 ESV)

Listen to him. Listen to Jesus. Every word of the Bible is the voice of Jesus. “We know the Bible is the word of Jesus because when we hear it, we hear his voice.” (John Piper)

So if you find yourselves wanting to know God’s voice: wanting his direction, his guidance, his knowledge, understanding or thoughts, then come back to the Word. Come back to Jesus. Because “whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise” (John 5:19).
