Tomorrow

My six year old is currently fixated on the Exodus plagues (go figure). We were reading them together the other night and something jumped right out at me. Here’s the scene: plague number two is going down. Frogs. Frogs in homes, frogs in the palace, frogs on people, frogs in your dinner. Frogs. Many, many frogs.

And it gets to the point where Pharaoh understandably has had enough of the frogs. He pleads with Moses to ask God to get rid of them. “Sure thing” (I’m paraphrasing) Moses replies, “you pick the time”…

““Tomorrow,” Pharaoh said.” (Exodus 8:10 NIV)

Hold up. Tomorrow?

Tomorrow?!

Frogs in your bed, frogs on your head… everywhere frogs and you choose tomorrow as the time to be rid of them? Why not today, why not immediately?

As I sat with my incredulity for Pharaoh’s ridiculous decision it occurred to me that we often pick ‘tomorrow’ in response to something that needs to be dealt with today:

Make the phone call to apologise – tomorrow.
Go to the gym – tomorrow.
Confess the sin – tomorrow.
Begin tithing – tomorrow.
Tidy the mess – tomorrow.
Forgive the hurt – tomorrow.
Step away from the addiction – tomorrow.
Pick up your cross – tomorrow.
Follow Him – tomorrow.

How often do we put off until tomorrow what God is calling us to deal with today?

I don’t know whether Pharaoh’s reasoning for delay was pride and wanting to appear in control, or confusion about whether God was able to deal with the frogs in a timely manner. I don’t know if his deferment was due to wanting to renege on his commitment to Moses and God or, because he didn’t want to give up the comfort and security that the Israelites provided him. Whatever the reason, if frogs in your life are impacting everything you do, if they’re multiplying and preventing you from living free, then don’t wait until tomorrow to deal with something God can sort right now.

God can take the frogs away.

Ask him, today.
