Tell them.

Earlier this year, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, an Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court, died. Her death resulted in an outpouring of praise and celebration for her life, achievements, and the things she stood for. Tributes were made in international newspapers and social media was flooded with accolades and individuals’ thanks.

It made me wonder whether all those people who praised her life ever told her how much they appreciated her while she was alive.

I understand tribute and honouring those who have passed away. But wouldn’t it be great if our loved ones and those we admire got to hear words of admiration and encouragement while they’re still with us?

“I thank my God every time I remember you.” (Philippians 1:3 NIV)

Paul knew the right formula when it came to celebrating others:

  1. Remember them
  2. Thank God for them
  3. Tell them

So here’s the challenge for the week: encourage and celebrate those that God has put in your life.

Bless your boss, show kindness to your kids, celebrate your spouse, thank the teller, notice your neighbour, cheer up your colleague and then choose words to express your gratefulness that they are who they are.

Show them that you see them this week. Remember them, pray for them, and then write the letter, make the call, put the note in the lunchbox… don’t put it off until it’s too late.

Let them know that they are loved. Today.
