Mary laid Jesus, her firstborn child, in a manger, because there was no room. We know that right?! We read it every Christmas, we hear it in the cute nativities, “no room…” “no room…” God arrives on the earth, and there is no room. No space available. No welcome. No readiness, expectation or preparation. None. No room.
And it made me think about how much that is true for us today. I don’t know about you, but often there is no room in my life for Jesus. My schedule is packed, my to-do lists are long, my work is busy, my children are demanding… there is no room. Immanuel – God with us – has arrived, is ready and waiting to ‘enter in’ and there is no room.
How heart-breaking that we miss out on so much of who God is and what He is doing because we don’t make the room to welcome Him, to be with Him, to allow Him to enter into the busyness of our lives. He stands at the door to our hearts and lives and knocks, waiting, to be invited in (Revelation 3:20). If you do nothing else on your to-do list today, I implore you – make room.
