I had a dream this week. My husband bought us a house and it was moving in day. The thing is, I hadn’t seen the house before we moved in. Hadn’t seen photos, hadn’t seen a floorplan – nothing. I knew nothing about my new home. You might be thinking at this point that my hubby is extremely brave or extremely foolish, but that’s not the thing to hold onto here!

I was in the bathroom of the house: a smallish bathroom with minimal light and minimal wiggle room. I was with a school Mum friend and she asked me what the rest of the house was like, “I don’t know, I’ve not looked.” I replied. You can imagine her response, “Whhaaatttt?! That’s crazy! Don’t you want to know? Let’s go look…” we trotted off down a corridor and found ourselves in a huge bathroom. Expansive doesn’t even come close. There was a freestanding bath in the middle of the room, windows across two of the walls looking out over a rocky cliff-front and beach view, all new, sparkling and white, shiny chrome, a shower with jets coming out all over the place… it is hard to describe how incredible the bathroom truly was.

Later in the dream, I was working sat on my bed. Books piled up around me, writing in what I assume was my journal, propped up by a pillow. Not exactly comfortable, but something I was used to. A friend from church came in (I assume all these lovely people were helping unpack) and said, “So tell me about the new house…” My reply once again was, “I’ve not looked. I don’t know.” It was at this point I noticed a door in the corner of the bedroom. We figured we’d go exploring together and see what was behind it. I opened the door into a long office set up with two desks – one for Dan and one for me. Just like the bathroom, it was full of light with views stretching across the width of the room looking out over the sea and sky. It was unbelievable. It had everything we needed… and more.

It was at this point that I woke up.

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” Ephesians 3:20-21 NIV

So here’s the thing. Paul writes to the Ephesians that God is able to achieve infinitely more than we could ever dare to dream, than we could ever begin to imagine or even conceive of asking for. In my dream I was so content to be in a mediocre, gloomy house. There was nothing wrong with it per se. But it certainly wasn’t inspiring or inviting. It wasn’t a house that was fully utilised, established and achieving the purpose it was created for. There was so much more. More rooms, more gifts, more opportunities to be had in that house. But I wasn’t even looking. I wasn’t even exploring. I wasn’t stepping out. I was blind to what was right in front of me.

That house represented my life.

God is a God of beyond. Beyond expectation, beyond kindness, beyond love. He knows what we need before we even ask and can accomplish in us what we would consider impossible. He can outdo our imagination. He can exceed our wildest dreams. Our God is the God of adventure and He’s waiting for us to simply open some doors and start exploring all that He has given us. He’s waiting for us to step out of where we’re comfortable and into the unknown. He’s waiting for us to believe that there might be more and get up as a result. He’s waiting to show you just how much He loves you and all that He’s given you that you might wake up and come alive to the gifts that He has for you today.
