We’ve spent some time recently thinking about Matthew 6:33, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” The last part of this verse, “as well” can also be translated as “also”, “added”, “besides”, “abundantly”…
More. In addition. On top of. In excess. Beyond. Overflowing…
God is not a God of limits. He is not a God of minimisation but one of multiplication and blessing. Now that might not always look as we expect it to. It might be that we’re walking through tough or challenging seasons, but our circumstances don’t change the promises of God. God always has more for us.
More wealth, practical or physical blessing? Maybe not. But definitely more peace, more joy, more love. Jesus gave up everything so we could have more, so we could have the “as well”. I’ve been asking God recently for ‘more’ – more of Him, more love, more revelation, more hope – and the way He’s answered has meant I’ve had to become less… but His more is always worth the journey.
When we’re seeking first His kingdom and righteousness all the other stuff falls into its rightful place under Jesus, but the other stuff isn’t get forgotten. God still knows the challenges and stuff of life that take up your thoughts and days. Why not camp out in Ephesians 3:20 with me this week. The passion translation expresses this idea of more beautifully,
“Never doubt God’s mighty power to work in you and accomplish all this. He will achieve infinitely more than your greatest request, your most unbelievable dream, and exceed your wildest imagination! He will outdo them all, for his miraculous power constantly energizes you.”
The “immeasurably more” that we read in the NIV comes from the Greek “perissos” and means ‘exceeding a need’. This is no meager offer God is giving us. He can do immeasurably more, exceedingly abundantly, more than we can ask or imagine. Let’s get better at asking for more of what God is offering.
