Foundational Words

“These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundational words, words to build a life on. If you work these words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who built his house on solid rock. Rain poured down, the river flooded, a tornado hit—but nothing moved that house. It was fixed to the rock.”
Matthew 7:24-25 MSG

Anyone who has met me knows that I can be, er, emotional (?!) from time to time! I’m a fiery kinda girl who feels big feelings and then wears them for everyone else to see. Anyone who has met my husband will know that for him, the river runs deep. Steady, reliable, logical and wise. But, he’s still a feeler.

We are all feelers. We all have emotions. We might display them differently, but we all feel. We are all moved by situations, circumstances – a conversation, sports, relationships – the good, bad and ugly days. All totally normal and good.

The issue comes however, when we start to allow our feelings and emotions to guide us rather than the foundational words of scripture. Jesus’ words are dependable, steadfast, life-giving words that we can build our lives on. If we want to have lives that are unshakable in the storms, we need to be building on the word of the Lord – not just hearing the word, but putting it into practice too. Open your Bible this week and allow God’s word to help you stand firm fixed to the rock.
