Part of the online security for a company that will need to send me emails from time to time was to select a phrase that they then include in the subject line of any email they send me. This means if I receive an email from them, I’ll know it is legit and not spam because it’ll have this secret ‘code’ if you like.
Well, I’d forgotten about that, and so when I received an email this morning from an internet company telling me to “seek first the kingdom of God” it kinda stopped me in my tracks!
What does it mean for us to seek first God’s kingdom and his righteousness? I love the message translation – “Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met. Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.” (Matthew 6:33-34 MSG)
I’ve been pondering this a lot recently and it can be easy to get carried away with the ‘what-if’ or the ‘what-now’ questions. But, if, moment by moment, we are choosing to seek God first – his reign and rule in our lives – then the worries very quickly dissipate as we discover that everything falls into place when God is in His rightful place. Don’t get distracted by looking too far ahead, just look to Jesus and ask him, “How can I seek you in whatever is next?”
How can you seek God’s rule and reign in your life moment by moment? How can you seek to honour and glorify Him as you go about your day? On a banking app I have, it allows you to set a personalised greeting on opening the programme. Mine says, “God’s money”… and that is a small reminder that helps me seek first God’s kingdom and His righteousness when it comes to spending money. What small pointers can you put in place today that will help you seek first His kingdom and righteousness?
