London Bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down… well, it’s not… but Big Ben is. The load of the tower is too much for the foundations and London clay soil and as such Big Ben is beginning to bend to one side creating a tilt. If the acceleration continues at its current rate then it’ll lean to the same extent as the Tower of Pisa in approximately 4,000 years.
What’s holding you up? A decent bank balance? Good health? A strong network of family and friends? A secure job?
When the foundations all around us begin to quake under the pressure piled on top, what stops you from sinking and tipping over? When the clay of life starts to dry out leaving the ground unstable, what keeps you upright and stable?
The Lord upholds all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down. (Psalm 145:14 ESV)
I love this verse because there’s a sense of movement. We don’t have to be perfectly together before God reaches out to help. We can be mid fall and He’ll reach out with his “righteous right hand” to strengthen, help, and uphold us (Isaiah 41:10).
We may have made some poor choices in what we’ve been building our lives on. Or we may have sensible foundations but have piled on the jobs and to-do’s that leave us sinking trying to hold it all up by ourselves. Perhaps situations outside our control have put the pressure on making the weight too much to bear.
Either way, the promise is for all, and it’s not news to Jesus that we need extra support to keep it all together for “He was there before any of it came into existence and holds it all together right up to this moment” (Colossians 1:17 MSG).
He holds it together right up to this moment. Right now… to this moment. So take a deep breath and remember that even if you’re tipping over the edge, Jesus will lift you up and hold you together.
Right now. He holds you up.
