One of my kids was on the struggle bus recently and just having a very hard time not realising that the world was not against him and that despite how he felt I was actually being super super kind, gracious and loving. In the middle of our conversation, wanting him to grasp and understand just how much I loved him, I said, “Child, I think you’re forgetting who I am…”
Instantly in that moment, I felt the Holy Spirit whisper the exact same thing to me.
Child… I think you’re forgetting who I am.
When things aren’t going how we expect them to, when life is difficult, or when hormones are raging, or when we receive terrible news… how often in those moments do we rage at God, or sulk, or metaphorically slam doors and hold him at arms length? How often do we shut Him down and refuse to engage out of a place of pain? How often do we wonder how on earth can God love us when life is unfolding as it is?
Child… I think you’re forgetting who He is.
He is love.
He is slow to anger and abounding in love. His desire is to lavish His inseparable love on you. He loves you with an everlasting, never-stopping, always-enduring love because you are His treasured possession, His chosen child.
You are precious in His sight and you are loved with an almighty, death-defying love. You are safe and secure in that love. You are rooted and grounded in that love. That love is higher, wider, deeper and stronger than you can comprehend and it is expansive enough to cover you and carry you through all that you’re enduring and feeling and experiencing right now.
“Know this: God, your God, is God indeed, a God you can depend upon.” (Deuteronomy 7:9 MSG)
God sees you in this moment. You are not alone. He is mighty to save, your greatest encourager, your shepherd, friend and Father.
He hasn’t forgotten about you.
So child, don’t forget who He is.
